本書是根據《大學英語教學大綱》（理工科本科用）專業閱讀部分的要求編寫的。全書共分為9個部分（Part),每個部分含若干個單元（Unit)。其中第1部分由4個Unit組成，介紹環境科學與工程概述和歷史；第2部分由5個Unit組成，介紹水污染來源種類、水化學、積壓種污水處理技術、處理單元設備等等。第3部分由5個Unit組成，介紹大氣化學和空氣污染及其防治；第4部分由5個Unit 組成，為固體廢棄物處理及處置方法；第5部分由5個Unit組成，介紹土壤污染及控制技術；第6部分由5個Unit組成，介紹環境監測，包括水樣采集程序、水質指標及分析；第7部分由5個Unit組成，為環境生態學，介紹生態系統與生物多樣性、生態恢復的方法等；第8、9部分作為拓展，分別介紹環境科學與工程專業科技英語的特點及翻譯技巧以及學術性論文的摘要寫作要領。全書最后為附錄，使環境科學與工程專業的學生能夠更好地閱讀、翻譯專業文獻，深入學習，并提高實際應用英語的能力。
